  23. I don't know about Australia, but In New Zealand, I would estimate >70% of the
  24. population know _only_ English.  No other language is formally taught in our
  25. schools as a compulsary subject.  Except our native Maori language which is
  26. increasing. but is a very minor component of the curriculum.

  28. Other languages are as options only.

  30. I think the second language of choice here, might be japanese these days (due
  31. to tourism) followed by European Languages.. French and German.
